Jon Guymer was born in Brisbane in 1942 and spent his formative years in Queensland. He graduated from the University of Queensland with honors in Engineering before relocating to Melbourne to work for the Army. During this period, he served in the Special Forces, where he was active in parachuting and unarmed combat, ultimately achieving the rank of Captain. He also earned his pilot’s license during this time.
In 1968, Jon began a distinguished 34-year career with Mobil Oil. He started in Commercial Sales and product technical roles, earning a world patent for his innovative process to predict engine failure in jet engines. His career progressed into Commercial Marketing, where he held several senior positions, including Queensland Manager and General Manager for Mobil in the Pacific Islands.
Jon later moved to Mobil’s Head Office in Washington, DC, where he was involved in Quality Management for Mobil’s affiliates worldwide. Upon returning to Australia, he became actively involved in sailing at the Sandringham Yacht Club, as well as with trailer sailers on the Gippsland Lakes and in the Whitsundays.
A passionate restorer, Jon has completely restored a 1951 Bentley. He is married to Joyce, a former teacher, and they have three children: Emma, a doctor; Fiona, a veterinarian; and Warren, an engineer and corporate director. Jon is also a proud grandfather to eight wonderful grandchildren
